Match the message to the relationship

There is no universal number of texts that makes an FWB relationship work. A few messages a week may feel comfortable for one pair and distant for another. What matters is whether each person understands the other's expectations.

Before worrying about reply times, ask whether you are texting for a particular plan, for friendship or for reassurance about the relationship. Different goals call for different conversations.

Useful messages you can adapt

Making plans: “Want to hang out this weekend? No worries if your schedule is full.”
Checking in: “I’m enjoying spending time together. Does how we’re doing things still feel good to you?”
Clarifying frequency: “I’m comfortable texting a couple of times a week, but I know everyone is different. What works for you?”
Respecting a boundary: “Thanks for telling me. I understand, and I won’t keep asking.”

What to avoid

  • Sending repeated messages after someone has declined or stopped responding.
  • Using jealousy, threats or silent treatment to get attention.
  • Assuming a playful message means permission for physical intimacy.
  • Treating a slow reply as proof of romantic interest or disinterest.

If you need steady emotional contact and the arrangement does not offer it, the answer may be a different relationship—not a more effective text.

When to move beyond the phone

Text is useful for scheduling and quick check-ins. Sensitive questions about exclusivity, changing feelings or ending the arrangement may work better by voice or in person when practical and safe.

Common questions

Should FWB text every day?

Only if both people want that pattern. Daily texting is a preference, not a requirement or proof of commitment.

What if they only text at night?

Consider whether that matches the kind of connection you want. If not, discuss it plainly rather than trying to decode hidden meaning.
